Natural compounds from honeysuckle can inhibit COVID-19 variants

A Taiwan-based cross-institutional research team comprising our university, National Cheng Kung University, Chung Shan Medical University, and Chiayi Christian Hospital has published new findings in the international journal “Virus Research”. The study confirms that MIR2911, a natural small molecule found in honeysuckle, can effectively inhibit the COVID-19 Delta variant, offering new opportunities for the development of natural antiviral therapies. The Delta variant previously caused severe global impacts due to its high transmissibility and pathogenicity, highlighting the continued need for effective prevention and treatment strategies. The study shows that MIR2911 can precisely bind to specific sites on the Delta variant, disrupting viral replication and reducing its infectivity and virulence. In addition, the research team developed an innovative delivery system using virus-like particles to encapsulate MIR2911, improving its stability and cellular uptake with minimal side effects. These findings not only demonstrate MIR2911’s antiviral effects against the Delta variant but also highlight its potential as a natural adjunct therapy for combating current and future COVID-19 variants, providing a new direction for global disease prevention efforts.
