Introduction

History

Biotechnology, an important industry of the twenty first century, is vigorously promoted by the Taiwan’s government. To coordinate with the government’s policy, National Chung Cheng University set development of biotechnology as the top priority of the university. Accordingly, former president, Dr. Kuo-Shung Cheng, and former Dean of College of Science, Dr. Teh-Chang Chou, established the M.S. program in Institute of Molecular Biology at 2000, initiating the education and the research in the field of life science at National Chung Cheng University. Since drastic progress has been made in the field of life science in recent years, casting significant and deep impact to humanity, former president Ren-Chuang Luo, hence, pushes the development of the field of life science enthusiastically, establishing B.S. program in Department of Life Science at 2003 and Ph.D. program in Institute of Molecular Biology at 2005. In a short period of time, Dr. Luo built a firm foundation for advancing the research in biotechnology and incubating outstanding students at National Chung Cheng University. To expand the scope of our research and pursue excellence in the depth of study, Institute of Biomedical sciences was established at 2007 and M.S program was initiated.

To comply with the recent policy of Ministry of Education, the degree-offering programs were renamed B.S. program in Biomedical Sciences, M,S, program in molecular biology, Ph.D. program in molecular biology, and M.S. program in biomedical sciences.

In addition, in line with the Department’s developmental characteristics of biomedicine, the Department of Life Sciences has been renamed the Department of Biomedical Sciences since 2017.


Teaching and research

Since the field of biomedical sciences is the center of the biotechnology industry, the curriculum and the research in our department focus on biological medicine. Specific emphasis is placed on fundamental courses, including biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology. Courses discussing latest development in the post-genomic era of biomedical sciences are offered as advanced training. The research fields of the faculty include the molecular mechanisms and therapeutic strategy of cancer, autoimmune and neuromuscular diseases, structures and functions of protein, development, viral replication, epigenetics, nano-medicine, system biology, bioinformatics, and physical chemistry.
